  1. Team Communication: Slack
  • Slack allows us to use instant messaging so that we are always able to be in contact with one another. Unlike Facebook, Slack allows us to create channels to organize our conversations, add threads to those conversations and archive our channels so that we always have an easily searchable record of previous discussions. Slack integrates with Google Docs so we can share files easily.
  • A potential problem is that it may be difficult to find conversations when there are a lot of different channels and private messages.

  1. Document Sharing: Google Docs
  • Docs allows for seamless collaboration; we can work together on the same document with limited restraint. We can also track document changes and history to revert back to a previous version if needed. It also provides ease of access – with a simple link we can see our content and share that content to anyone we give the link to.
  • Another big advantage for us is Google Drive integration. All files you edit in Docs automatically save to Google Drive every time you make a change. Even if you suffer a computer crash or internet loss, you can pick up exactly where you left off.

  1. Version Control: GitHub
  • GitHub is going to allow us to easily keep track of our versions and changelogs. It is a very intuitive VCS with a fairly simple UI. We can allow contributions to our project by just simply sharing the link to the repository – It requires no setup for a new user. Integration is also a big one here, GitHub can integrate with almost all common platforms, as well as highlight syntax in over 200 different languages.
  • A couple possible drawbacks we may want to consider are downtime and security risks. Although GitHub provides us with everything we need to collaboratively track our code/versions – GitHub also does frequent maintenance which means less accessibility during those times. GitHub also faces quite a bit of DNS attacks which affects all of its users.

  1. Prototyping: InVision
  • InVision will be a quick and intuitive prototyping tool for our designers/UX people. This is going to allow us to easily share our designs and mock-ups. We can create folders and separate projects for easy navigation and organizing. On top of clickable prototypes with multiple screens, we can also animate UI prototypes and mockups.
  • Another great feature with this app is the ability to access basic CSS code from graphic elements, which will make it easier to communicate to our devs.

  1. Time Tracking: TSheets
  • TSheets is going to allow us to not only time track, but it also has robust scheduling features. We’re would be able to clock in the whole team at once and also create and assign shifts on the go. We can edit these shifts in seconds to accommodate any project adjustments and it will notify whoever is assigned to that shift. TSheets is also a great option because it’s accessible from multiple devices, so you can easily clock in and time track when you’re on the move.
  • Tsheets would also help us in other business areas because of the accounting tools that are integrated directly into it.

  1. Project Management: Asana
  • Asana is a great choice for us to manage our projects. It has tons of integrations and features we can utilize, plus it’s inexpensive. Asana can easily integrate with Slack and Google Docs – as well as – the rest of the Google Suite. You can easily sync your tasks in Asana and project deadlines to your Google Calendars.
  • We can simply manage multiple projects for each department of the team. You can also leave comments on tasks if you have questions or need info – and it will notify the project leader via email so we can keep workflow going smoothly with minimal downtime.

  1. Code Testing: GitPod
  • GitPod is a web-based IDE where we can test/debug code. GitPod’s collaboration works very similarly to Google Docs where we can share a running workspace to quickly look at a code together with a simple link. It also has a snapshot feature if we needed to send snippets of work-in-progress.
  • GitPod is also fully integrated with GitHub, so we can start workflow from any Git hosting platform and maintain version control as we go.
  • It’s a very simple and minimalistic platform – but simplicity and lack of features might be a possible problem down the road.

  1. Digital Marketing Analytics: WebCEO
  • We can use WebCEO to manage all aspects of SEO including marketing analytics. We can retrieve search term queries, traffic patterns, and 100’s of other critical data for optimizing our sites with the most effective, and competitive content.
  • WebCEO also offers ‘marketing milestones’ that will help us analyze our overall performance and fine-tune our marketing strategy.

  1. SEO: WebCEO
  • On top of the digital marketing analytics we get from this tool, they also offer us a full range of SEO tools. WebCEO is an all-in-one style service. We can check our SEO status and prioritize by which areas need the most improvement: Technical, Content, User Experience, and Mobile. We will get a list of issues and recommendations for what needs our attention first to boost SEO.
  • Lead generating is also made easy with social analytics, and competitor metrics to gather data to find our target audience.

  1. Page Speed Testing: K6 Cloud
  • K6 is a cloud-based load testing solution we can use to help the team identify and fix issue early in the development cycle. We can test load times from multiple geographic locations to ensure the best optimization across the board. K6 will provide us with comprehensive data on requests, HTTP failures, RPS, and average response times. We can also use it to compare performance results between tests over time.
  • One thing to consider is the pricing. K6 has a pricey monthly fee. But are we willing to take a bit of a hit financially for convenience and in-depth performance insights?

  1. Well done Jesse. Smart choices and great descriptions – personable, uses ‘we’ language and takes a practical approach.

Note: I’m not completely convinced by GitPod as testing software but I can see how it could work …. maybe.
